And even if Richardson is joined by Boise State's Doug Martin in the first round, this will mark the fewest running backs to go in the opening stanza in back-to-back years.
In other words, one of the most dominant positions in the game's history has become little more than an afterthought.
"You spread people out, try to get the defense out of position, look for a mismatch and then try to hit a crease," said St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who coached Chris Johnson in Tennessee when Johnson ran for 2,006 yards in 2009. Johnson, only 195 pounds, excels in large part because of his exceptional quickness and speed.
"We don't line up and run out of I-formation that much anymore" Fisher said. "The days when you lined up with the running back deep in the backfield and let him watch the blocking develop, that's done. Maybe once in a while or after you've been lucky enough to build up a lead and you're grinding it out in the second half. But that's situational stuff, not your base offense."
The evolution of the NFL as an elaborate seven-on-seven league has been obvious by the explosion of passing numbers. Not only did New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees obliterate the single-season record with 5,476 passing yards (breaking Dan Marino's mark of 5,084 in 1984) in 2011, but Tom Brady (5,235) would have and Matthew Stafford (5,038) was close. Until last year, Marino and Brees were the only passers to eclipse the 5,000-yard mark).
"The
idea that you throw to score and run to win has been taken to the
extreme," said Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith, whose bell-cow rusher
Michael Turner finished third in ground yards (1,340) last season. "It's
hard, especially for a defensive coach like me, to sometimes accept
that, but that's the nature of the game. It's four and five wideouts,
and the short passing game has become the running game."
Receivers such as Wes Welker, Roddy White, Brandon Marshall and Marques Colston have become the extension of the running game. That is particularly true in the regular season, when the officiating tends to tilt toward the passing game.

All of that means the running back has become an endangered species, the in-line blocking tight end is no more than a reserve and the true fullback is all but a dinosaur.
During the five drafts from 2007 to 2011, only 14 first-round running backs were selected and just 28 total drafted in the first two rounds. Only Darren McFadden in 2008 was taken with one of the top five picks.
By comparison, from 1988 to 1992 – when eventual Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith were chosen – 21 running backs were taken in the first round and 38 in the first two. From 1978 to 1982, the numbers were 26 in the first round and 44 overall. Both of those five-year periods came when the NFL had only 28 teams rather than the current 32.
While teams shy away from drafting workhouse-type backs, they're also very protective of their veteran rushers.
"If you have a good running back, you don't want to burn him out. It's all about keep him fresh now," said San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who limited bullish running back Frank Gore to 282 carries last season. "Frank wants the ball every down and I love that mentality. But you have to be smart, too, and it's my job to make sure he's healthy all season."
Which gets back to Richardson. He's a fabulously talented runner who might have been an overwhelming candidate to be the No. 3 overall pick … 20 years ago.
"Even 10 years ago, you see a player like that and you don't think twice about him," an AFC executive said. "You watch the way he played in those two games against LSU last season [including the national title game] and that's all you really need to know about him. He was everything for Alabama. He was their whole offense. LSU knew it, all the fans knew it and it didn't matter. He was the best offensive player on the field."
For all that praise, the executive stopped short of saying Richardson was a lock to go in the top 10.
"It really just all depends on how you want to build your team," the AFC executive said. "If you're in the minority and you try to build around the running game and defense or you're trying to protect your quarterback because he's limited, then maybe you do it. But there's a lot of thinking that goes into it."
General managers such as Cleveland's Tom Heckert and Tampa Bay's Mark Dominik have to weigh the value of a running back that high in the draft against players who might help the passing game.
Or help defend against it.
"You have to look at all the angles of how a player can help you today versus over the long haul," Dominik said. "I think that one thing that helps is the new structure for rookie contracts. Without the burden of the big signing bonus and making sure that player is going to be with you for five or six years because of the money, you can focus a little more on today."
So, that means the pick is Richardson?
Dominik flashed a wicked grin and walked off without even a hint of an answer.

Pat Summitt celebrates after Tennessee won the SEC title this season
Pat Summitt was 22 years old when she first coached the University of
Tennessee women's basketball team. It was Dec. 7, 1974 (Tennessee lost
to Mercer 84-83). She was the daughter of a dairy farmer and rehabbing a
knee injury in hopes of making the Montreal Olympics.
No one else really wanted the job. Coaching the Lady Volunteers was essentially a volunteer position.
One thousand ninety-eight victories, eight NCAA championships, two Olympics (silver as a player on that fixed-up knee, gold in 1984 as coach) and a singular impact on modern athletics later, Pat Summitt announced her retirement Wednesday.
This is a bittersweet day, of course. Summitt is just 59, seemingly with so many more years to give to teaching and inspiring players on her team and afar.
Eight months ago, however, Summitt went public with her diagnosis of early-onset dementia. She coached UT to a 27-9 season but will now assume the title of "head coach emeritus." While she'll still be involved in the program, former player and longtime assistant Holly Warlick is the new head coach.
"I've loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role," Summitt said in a statement. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday.
The Wizard of Knoxville they called her, and if there was ever someone John Wooden may have needed to look up to, it's Summitt. And like Wooden, it's likely Summitt will continue to lead and instruct long after she is no longer pacing a sideline.
Summitt's greatest impact was helping redefine the way women could compete and be coached. She came of age in an era when women were to be protected – there was still 6-on-6 basketball, where players only ran half the court, because some thought girls couldn't handle any additional exertion. Summitt scoffed at that and coached the game like Henry Iba or Bob Knight would've, no excuses, no limits, no apologies. She leaned on those lessons her father, Richard, taught her growing up on that family farm near Clarksville, Tenn.
Hard work was non-negotiable.
"The cows didn't take a day off," she joked a few years back in an interview. "For me, it was the only way I knew how to approach coaching. I think we surprised some people. I think they like our intensity.
"I'm sure there were some good old boys who thought, 'I'm not going to watch women's basketball.' But when they saw it, they saw something they didn't expect. I'm glad that's changed."
What was once a hidden pursuit is now big business. High school. College. Even a pro league.
What Summitt found with her no-nonsense, why-not-us? style was a legion of young women craving just that kind of attitude. They flocked to Knoxville and built powerhouse teams.
She couldn't take them all, but that was the beauty of it. There she was, this mountain of a figure on the rim of the Smokies, coaching and challenging in a way few had ever seen.
The sport flipped on a dime. Maybe all of women's athletics. Suddenly, talented and tenacious athletes stopped having to apologize for wanting to compete. Like a splashed pebble rippling endlessly outward, her impact kept extending, beyond basketball and into every other pursuit.
Summitt is tall and graceful with high cheekbones, and she had a flair for flamboyant outfits on the sideline that called attention to her style, not just her famed stare that could melt a mistake-prone point guard.
She was tough. And smart. And fashionable. A wife, a mother, a role model. She was seemingly capable of doing it all.
Men admired her. If there had ever been a woman that could've succeeded in men's college basketball, she was it. If the nature of recruiting was different, she was tough and sharp enough to lead.
That she didn't have to may have been her greatest victory. What more of a career could she have dreamed? What bigger of a life?
Fame. Fortune. Respect. Satisfaction. At its highest level, women's basketball was elevated to something close to the men. And who could've imagined that in 1975? She was so young and the team so informal then her players called her "Pat."
They still do.
Summitt says she isn't stopping now and there is no reason not to believe it.
"If anyone asks, you can find me observing practice or in my office," she said. "Coaching is the great passion of my life, and the job to me has always been an opportunity to work with our student-athletes and help them discover what they want. I will continue to make them my passion."
There's more though, and this is where a second stage of Summitt's life could mean so much. She's already established the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund for the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
She plans on remaining "active" in that cause, and just like 38 years ago, her ability to raise funds, awareness and commitments from private and public sources could continue her run as an impossible-to-ignore force of nature.
If there was ever a disease that needs a powerful, poignant face, it's that one.
Everyone knew this day was coming when her illness was revealed. The 2011-12 season was a curtain call. She had begun to forget offensive sets and struggled with the incredible demands of her job and life.
True to form, she made her announcement and promised, "There's not going to be any pity party. And I'll make sure of that."
There wasn't, just a run to the Elite Eight that ended at the hands of eventual national champion Baylor, a team of incredible talent (6-foot-8 Brittney Griner) and focus (the first 40-0 team in NCAA history.)
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has long considered Summitt an icon and a mentor. She was 12 when Summitt began coaching. Mulkey recognized that this woman was the trailblazer that changed the culture so someone like Griner could one day feel empowered by her physical gifts and someone like Mulkey could be comfortable in demanding so much from her team.
No, the battle isn't fully won. No, there isn't complete acceptance. But it's come so far. It's come, really, so, so fast.
When Baylor won the NCAA tournament game against Tennessee and Mulkey knew she had likely ended Summitt's career, this one-of-a-kind, too-big-to-have-dreamed-come-true career, she could only be humbled.
"What do you say after the game?" Mulkey said that night.
"You say, 'I love you.' "

She plans on remaining "active" in that cause, and just like 38 years ago, her ability to raise funds, awareness and commitments from private and public sources could continue her run as an impossible-to-ignore force of nature.
If there was ever a disease that needs a powerful, poignant face, it's that one.
Everyone knew this day was coming when her illness was revealed. The 2011-12 season was a curtain call. She had begun to forget offensive sets and struggled with the incredible demands of her job and life.
True to form, she made her announcement and promised, "There's not going to be any pity party. And I'll make sure of that."
There wasn't, just a run to the Elite Eight that ended at the hands of eventual national champion Baylor, a team of incredible talent (6-foot-8 Brittney Griner) and focus (the first 40-0 team in NCAA history.)
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has long considered Summitt an icon and a mentor. She was 12 when Summitt began coaching. Mulkey recognized that this woman was the trailblazer that changed the culture so someone like Griner could one day feel empowered by her physical gifts and someone like Mulkey could be comfortable in demanding so much from her team.
No, the battle isn't fully won. No, there isn't complete acceptance. But it's come so far. It's come, really, so, so fast.
When Baylor won the NCAA tournament game against Tennessee and Mulkey knew she had likely ended Summitt's career, this one-of-a-kind, too-big-to-have-dreamed-come-true career, she could only be humbled.
"What do you say after the game?" Mulkey said that night.
"You say, 'I love you.' "

A determination that should be made by the NCAA
In appearance after appearance – speech, interview, panel discussion –
NCAA president Mark Emmert likes to fall back on an ideal of innocence
in defending his organization.
It's used as a shield against claims the players should profit off any financial windfall they create more than the traditional tuition, room and board, have professional representation or really any argument for reform.
"The whole principle of the collegiate model of athletics is these are college students who play sports," Emmert said last month at the Final Four. "If they want to be professional athletes, those options are available to them and I would encourage them to pursue them and I hope they do well at them."
It isn't that simple, and Emmert knows it. Whether he actually truly believes in the collegiate model is anyone's guess.
What we do know, with Wisconsin basketball player Jarrod Uthoff serving as the latest example, is that in practice, some coaches see Emmert's system otherwise.
These aren't college students that play sports. They are commodities to be controlled.
Uthoff is a 6-foot-8 freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who is looking to transfer, mainly because he thinks the Badgers' playing style doesn't best fit his game. He came to that conclusion during a season spent practicing but not playing.
"After having a year under the system, I have a much better understanding of what the system entails and I want to find a better fit," Uthoff told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday.
He told Badgers coach Bo Ryan of his decision last week, and while Uthoff thinks that conversation should stay between them, he thought they left it well enough. "It was OK," he said.
Then he said he received word from the university that he was prohibited from transferring to any school in the Big Ten and ACC, as well as Iowa State and Marquette. That's 25 schools Ryan has deemed impermissible.
Under NCAA statutes, a school can block a player from transferring to any school it wishes and have the athlete still receive athletic aid for the first year. The player also must sit out a season. It's a terrible rule, one that even in the best of circumstances belies the "collegiate model." This is one of the worst.
"I didn't expect it," said Uthoff, who said he didn't know a school could block him when he originally signed with Wisconsin.
Unfortunately, this isn't unusual. It's common enough that high-profile cases have emerged in just the past six months at Saint Joseph's, Tulsa and Maryland. MetroSportsReport.com first reported the Uthoff story Tuesday.
Almost every transfer involves some restrictions. There shouldn't be any unless another program has tampered with a player, a determination that should be made by the NCAA, not a jilted coach.
Uthoff's 25-school ban isn't even a record. In 2009, Miami barred quarterback Robert Marve from transferring to the other 11 schools in the ACC, 12 in the SEC and four other in-state programs, a whopping 27 colleges. Marve, a Tampa native, had to go all the way to Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
There may be an even higher example. If not, there will be. Just give these guys time.
Wisconsin declined to make Ryan available to Yahoo! Sports. Uthoff said he has appealed the decision to school officials, although he didn't have a timeframe on a decision. In the meantime, he plans to visit Creighton on Monday.
The circumstances of Uthoff's decision to leave or Ryan's decision to ban are immaterial. This is about the hypocrisy of the NCAA and its millionaire coaches and administrators.
When it comes to dodging calls for increased compensation for athletes, for fairer treatment of breadwinners, for explanation on why this entire billion-dollar enterprise remains tax-free, they lean on that simple collegiate model – these are just college students who play sports.
When it comes to actually running the enterprise, even a kid who's never scored a point is considered a controllable entity, a professional who signed a contract (a scholarship agreement that was neither individually nor collectively bargained, of course) with a school and must adhere to the letter of it.
Non-compete agreements are common in the working world, although not among college coaches and administrators who routinely skip town at the first improved offer.
If Emmert, Ryan, et al, want to resort to the "preparing young Mr. Uthoff for going pro in something other than sports" argument and thus teach him the value of a non-compete clause, well, that's for a professional setting, where the worker gets paid.
This is supposed to be a collegiate one, hearts, flowers and kids shooting hoops after chem lab, right?
Ryan rightfully is being raked over the coals on this. It's petty. It's heavy-handed. It's a bad, bad look for himself and his program and the administrators who are allowing it. They should all be ashamed, all the way to the university president and the Big Ten and the NCAA itself.
Bo Ryan is making $2.1 million per year, a rate that should demand he figures out how to successfully operate his program in spite of a teenager changing his mind. Wisconsin basketball is not going to crumble because it might have to face off against a former player one day.
Uthoff declined to offer an opinion on the rule. He sounded like a guy trying to figure out what was going to hit next. "It'd be nice to just be able to move on where I want," he said.
That should be "nice" for everyone involved. If you truly care about the students doing well, then there should be zero restrictions placed on them if they want to leave. If this were an academic scholarship, you'd expect the department head to perhaps express disappointment but wish him well.
That's academics. This is athletics, where they love to bloviate about teaching all these life lessons, yet can't figure out how to be the bigger person, be the better person, be the adult.
This is the inherent problem with Emmert's moralizing and excuse-making. It's the inherent problem with the NCAA itself.
The hypocrisy is in the day-in, day-out actions, in the repeated proof that many of the high-profile people who make up the organization care nothing about any collegiate model or the betterment of "student-athletes" unless those student-athletes are doing something to better the adults first.
That is Mark Emmert's real collegiate model, no matter his speeches.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Minnesota Vikings (Sunday, Sept. 9): The Vikings and Jaguars ranked No. 1 and No. 4, respectively, in the dubious category of overpaying for particular free agents, according to this analysis, and I can't disagree. If you're going to spend that kind of money, you should get better than a guy who flopped one place and a guy who produced only one good year out of five. Worse, both teams did very little to help their young, developing quarterbacks, which is just sad when you consider that each spent a first-round draft pick in 2011 on Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder, respectively. The best formula for making a quarterback play better is to surround him with better people.
2. New York Jets at Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, Dec. 9):
Dear Jacksonville fans, don't take this as one of my annual shots at
your town or your team. In this case, I don't even need to go there.
Rather, this is all about Tim Tebow, who's coming home again to bask in
the love he gets from the Sunshine State and all the people who buy into
his hype. Fact is, it was very telling when Denver could only get
essentially a fourth-round draft pick for Tebow. Think about what
Arizona gave up for Kevin Kolb less than a year ago. That should put
some perspective on how much people around the league think he can play.
Then again, Tebow fans don't tend to rely on football logic.
3. St. Louis Rams at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Sunday, Dec. 23): In 2010, these teams matched up in a game that looked like the beginning of some special things for quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Josh Freeman. After 2011, those visions are definitely on hold, but the potential is still there. Both teams are in rebuilding mode with new coach Jeff Fisher in St. Louis and Greg Schiano in Tampa Bay, respectively. Both coaches will have to turn around their teams with quarterbacks they didn't select themselves. That situation is always problematic.
4. Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers (Thursday, Oct. 18): Last season, the Seahawks and 49ers did very little to resuscitate the rivalry coaches Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh developed during their days at USC and Stanford. The result was two really dull, lifeless games that San Francisco swept on the way to dominating the NFC West. Seahawks fans like to boast about their defense and they're hoping that quarterback Matt Flynn is something special. Likewise, the 49ers are hoping for a Randy Moss reincarnation and that Mario Manningham is more than a third receiver. Expect more of what you saw in 2011.
5. Indianapolis Colts at Detroit Lions (Sunday, Dec. 2): Sure, there's plenty of reason to be curious about how Andrew Luck is going to do in Indianapolis as he follows Peyton Manning. However, this game isn't likely to produce a lot of highlights. More likely, expect Detroit to put up about 45 points in what will be a lopsided win and a reminder that the Colts still have a long way to go to get back to what they were. Simply put, the Lions are a couple of years ahead of where the Colts hope to be one day.
6. Kansas City Chiefs at Cleveland Browns (Sunday, Dec. 9): This will get billed as a revenge game for Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel, who once ran the show in Cleveland. Anybody who knows Crennel understands that vengeance is not one of his stronger characteristics. The lack of such an approach is part of what makes him a really good man, but it doesn't make for good storylines in an otherwise really dull matchup.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday, Sept. 30): In the battle of cats, the only thing that could make this really interesting is if new Jaguars owner Shahid Khan let his mustache line up at wide receiver. That's just how lifeless this game is. Then again, it's a reflection of the cities. Jacksonville is a boring city on an ocean (that's hard to do) and Cincinnati is a boring city on a river (which is easier to do).
8. Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins (Sunday, Nov. 11): Lest the people of Jacksonville think I'm favoring the Dolphins (for whatever reason), fear not. Miami faces many great challenges these days. Right now, things are so bad in Magic City that the Dolphins might want to hire Ozzie Guillen away from the Marlins just to stir things up. Just kidding, my many Cuban-American friends. But let's face facts: The Dolphins have a home schedule that will be almost impossible to sell to the public. Aside from the traditional AFC East games, the Dolphins host the Titans, St. Louis, Oakland, Seattle and Jacksonville. There are people on the management side who wonder if they'll have more than 35,000 people at some of those games.
9. Buffalo Bills at Indianapolis Colts (Sunday, Nov. 25):
It's not every day that you get a potential matchup of a former Harvard
quarterback (Ryan Fitzpatrick) against a former Stanford quarterback
(Luck). Then again, there's a reason for that. Moreover, if that's the
most interesting thing you can say about this game, there's a lot of
work to be done by the marketing people.
10. Minnesota Vikings at St. Louis Rams (Sunday, Dec. 16): Another game featuring a pair of young, struggling quarterbacks on some young, struggling teams. Yeah, there's hope for both the Vikings and the Rams. But that hope is at least two years away from being realized.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos (Sunday, Sept. 9):
It's fair to say that all eyes will be on this one as quarterback
Peyton Manning is expected to make his return to the NFL. An injury cost
him all of the 2011 season and forced a departure from Indianapolis as
the Colts decided to rebuild. The question now is whether the Colts were
a little hasty in their decision as Manning tries to show he's healthy
again after four reported neck surgeries, including a procedure to fuse
two vertebrae. Meanwhile, the Steelers open the new season at the same
site of last year's playoff debacle against the then Tim Tebow-led
Broncos.
3. Denver Broncos at New England Patriots (Sunday, Oct. 7): Assuming that Manning is healthy, the NFL gets another episode of one of the great rivalries of this era. From 2001 to 2009, when Manning and New England quarterback Tom Brady combined to win six AFC titles and four Super Bowls, their teams faced off 12 times. That included three playoff games. New England has beaten Manning eight times in the Brady era. In addition, seven of the past nine games between Manning and the Patriots have been decided by a touchdown or less. Of course, New England has a couple of other good ones, such as hosting San Francisco and playing at Baltimore in a rematch of the AFC title game.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers at Dallas Cowboys (Sunday, Dec. 16): There's usually something special about a Steelers-Cowboys game, although it's not always immediately evident. For instance, the last time they played in 2008, the comeback win by Pittsburgh (17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter) marked the beginning of the end for the relationship between Terrell Owens and the Cowboys. In 2004, the Steelers rallied for 14 points in the fourth quarter in a comeback win, the first come-from-behind victory for then-rookie Ben Roethlisberger. Over the years, the teams have played to a 15-15 split, including three Super Bowl matchups.
5. Houston Texans at Detroit Lions (Thursday, Nov. 22): If you're looking for a game that features two up-and-coming teams that could vault into Super Bowl contention, look no further. The Texans believe they took a huge step last year by improving their defense. Now, they just have to keep quarterback Matt Schaub healthy. Similarly, the Lions discovered they can have a dominant offense with quarterback Matthew Stafford playing a full season for the first time last year. Now, they have to get the defense on track behind the likes of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
6. San Diego Chargers at New Orleans Saints (Sunday, Oct. 7): The last time former teammates Drew Brees and Philip Rivers faced off in 2008, they combined to complete 55 of 81 passes for 680 yards, six touchdown passes and one interception. New Orleans won 37-32. Expect this game, which will feature the subplots of Sean Payton's suspension and Norv Turner being under pressure, to be just as entertaining.
7. Green Bay Packers at New York Giants (Sunday, Nov. 25): You have to think that the Packers are still stinging from their playoff loss to the Giants at home in January. It was Green Bay's worst performance all season as it dropped eight passes and quarterback Aaron Rodgers missed two wide-open throws. The Giants dominated the game even after losing to the Packers in the regular season. This rematch will be tasty.
9. Baltimore Ravens at Washington Redskins (Sunday, Dec. 9): In a salute to the presidential election, the Beltway Bowl is held every four years between the Redskins. Sadly, the election is usually a lot more entertaining than the football game. However, that could change this year with the addition of Robert Griffin III to the Redskins lineup, assuming he goes to Washington next week with the NFL draft's No. 2 pick. Watching Griffin against the great Ravens defense could be really fascinating stuff.
10. Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (Monday, Nov. 26): Dear Cam Newton, before you take the field, go take a good look at the beaten up body of Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. That should serve as a cruel reminder of how important it is to be a pass-first quarterback. Yeah, Vick is still a phenomenal athlete, but he's not what he once was. Newton, who got off to a great start as a passer last season as a rookie, is the next big thing of the NFL right now. If he gets away from that and becomes too much of a runner … oh well.

The last seven Super Bowl champions spent their offseason strutting,
celebrating and planning on repeating, or at least contending for
another championship.
Not only did none of them repeat or return to play in the Super Bowl,
none of the seven made it even to the conference championship game.
Two failed to reach the playoffs at all.
The trend line here is no secret and, it stands to reason, will be something Tom Coughlin reminds his New York Giants as they prepare to defend their title. (No repeat champs since the New England Patriots won back-to-back in 2003 and '04).
You can't coast in the NFL. You can't lean on last year. You can't expect everything to work out again.
The NFL released its 2012 schedule Tuesday and the message for the Giants is clearer than ever.
New York's slate appears, at this point, not only stout and not only filled with teams seeking revenge, but back loaded with particularly tough games. The Giants may not be able to afford to start slow and hope to gather focus as the season goes on.
New York will open at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The NFL is moving up its traditional Thursday night start by a day so it doesn't conflict with President Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention.
It only gets tougher from there. The Giants face seven teams that made the playoffs last year. And twice late in the season they deal with three-game stretches against 2011 playoff teams.
November features Pittsburgh, a bye week, at Cincinnati and home against Green Bay. December brings New Orleans, at Atlanta and at Baltimore. The season closes with a home game against a Philadelphia team that underperformed most of 2011 but is full of talent and closed on a four-game win streak.

The NFL Players Association has filed a lawsuit against the NFL Coaches
In an odd twist believed to be driven by a poor
relationship between the organizations' respective leaders, the NFL
Players Association has filed a lawsuit against the NFL Coaches
Association seeking more than $650,000. Forced to pay such an amount
could cripple the fledgling NFLCA, an organization that less than a year
ago showed support for the players' union during the lockout by NFL
owners. The NFLCA has $308,509.69 in the bank, according to the lawsuit.
In addition, NFLCA executive director David Cornwell said his authority has been challenged in a letter from the NFLPA. Cornwell, hired by the NFLCA in February, said the NFLPA has suggested that its executive director, DeMaurice Smith, also has power over the coaches' association.
"I do not know which is more absurd, the claim that De is the Executive Director of the NFLCA or the fact that the NFLPA is blocking us from using coaches' dues money to advance the interests of coaches," Cornwell said. "Instead of working with the NFL on retirement benefits, uniform insurance, and other important issues for NFL coaches, now we have to incur real debt to deal with De Smith and the NFLPA.
"De has not done anything for NFL coaches and there is no support for a continued association with the NFLPA. I think the lawsuit and the alleged debt is a smoke screen to prevent the NFLCA from breaking away from the NFLPA."
A spokesman with the NFLPA declined to comment on the matter.
Smith and Cornwell have been at odds for years. Their relationship reached a low point in January when Cornwell wrote a 14-page critique of Smith's handling of the collective bargaining agreement negotiations last year. Cornwell, who ran against Smith for the NFLPA post in 2009, concluded that Smith should be fired.
Publicly, the NFLPA congratulated Cornwell when he was hired by the NFLCA. However, the organizations have been at odds over the past month as Cornwell tried to get files and control of the NFLCA account.
"This is obviously because of the relationship between [Cornwell and Smith]," the source said.The NFLCA had been run out of the offices of the NFLPA until the hiring of Cornwell. Over the years, the NFLPA supported the coaches' union by providing free office space and loaning it money and legal services.
Two sources said that a debt of approximately $350,000 was forgiven by former NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw in early 2008, a few months before he died.
"I have seen no evidence that the NFLPA sought to collect this alleged debt when they thought De controlled the Coaches Association," Cornwell said.
The NFLCA previously made Upshaw the executive director for business purposes. After Upshaw's death, Larry Kennan remained as the head of the NFLCA, but may not officially have been named the executive director.
Although a source said Smith had not expressed interest in the NFLCA post when he took over the NFLPA, the lawsuit clearly questions the hiring of Cornwell. It's believed that Smith would assume control of the NFLCA if the lawsuit is successful.

It also says the league encouraged players to view themselves as warriors and sold films that lionized the most brutal hits, such as the 1992 NFL Films production, "The Best of Thunder and Destruction." And it seeks to force the league to better educate players on the dangers of traumatic head injuries during the crucial period immediately after the draft.
The
league's investigation found that Williams offered off-the-books cash
payments of $1,500 for "knockouts," in which an opposing player was
knocked out of a game, or $1,000 for "cart-offs," in which an opponent
needed help off the field. The league has said the bounty pool grew as
large as $50,000, and that as many as 27 Saints defenders may have taken
part.
The investigation led to the indefinite suspension of Williams, who had taken a position with the St. Louis Rams and has since apologized for running the system, and the season-long suspension of Saints coach Sean Payton, who was found to have initially lied about the existence of a bounty program and instructed his defensive assistants to do the same.

But Bruce Hagen, an Atlanta attorney who has filed two lawsuits involving 33 different players, said the bounty system could play an important part in the lawsuits working their way through the courts.
"It shows that it's an institutionalized effort by management to go outside the bounds of the game as a way to motivate players even if it means intentionally having them injured," he said. "And that's wrong."

ATLANTA (AP) — The four former NFL players who sued the league on Monday in a state court in Atlanta could be leading a wave of new lawsuits that cite the New Orleans Saints' bounty system for hard hits as evidence that pro football didn't properly protect its players from concussions.
"It adds color" to the complaint, Haagen added. "And by raising it you hope to raise a general buzz in the public that this is an issue."
The NFL's investigation found that former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams offered thousands of dollars in cash payouts for violent hits over the past three seasons, including when the team won the Super Bowl. And while the four players named in the lawsuit don't claim to be victims of the scheme, they say it is indicative of a culture that has left them and other ex-players with debilitating conditions.
"There is nothing new or unique about what Gregg Williams said. Although the NFL has now punished Williams and the Saints, for almost its entire history the NFL glorified violent hits," said the complaint. "It encouraged its players to think of themselves as gladiators. But, along the way, the NFL failed to educate its players about the consequences of such a win-at-all costs mentality."
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said any allegation that the league intentionally sought to mislead players is without merit.
"It stands in contrast to the league's actions to better protect players and advance the science and medical understanding of the management and treatment of concussions," he said.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Myron Guyton, who played for the New York Giants and New England Patriots in the 1980s and 1990s; Lomas Brown, who played for five teams over a 17-year career that ended in 2002; Jessie Small, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Phoenix Cardinals and the Houston Oilers between 1989 and 1993; and Willie Whitehead, who played for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints from 1995 to 2006.
Atlanta attorney and NFL agent Von DuBose filed the lawsuit on behalf of the four players and their wives. He said the men suffer from memory loss, headaches, depression and other symptoms characteristic of those with traumatic brain injuries. They are among more than 1,000 former NFL players suing the league, according to lawyers involved. The cases say not enough was done to inform players about the dangers of concussions in the past, and not enough is done to take care of them today.
